What inspired you in this joint collection?
The theme is based on vintage uniforms of crew members and naval people on ships and submarines. It is very naval, it’s about the sea and about being on big ships. Nigel Cabourn always does naval, I’m always interested in it. And I also see Closed being very naval. It is denim. It is well washed. It somehow relates to the same thing.
How would you describe the items in the collection?
As it is a winter collection, the theme conveys heavy clothing, warmth for cold, terrible conditions – and it also has a lot of denim because you wear denim with that type of clothing. It’s very much workwear. When it comes to winter, I think of big duffel coats. I think of peacoats. I think of denim. I think of cotton drill. I think of sateen. The denim key pieces represent the theme, and we’ve got big parkas because, obviously, it is freezing cold on those boats. I didn’t want to do just a duffel coat. We also have some interesting jacquards and stripes with naval colours. And there are some heavy washes on the denim to make it look like it’s been taken from the sea.
You have a vast archive of vintage uniforms and they keep on inspiring you. What fascinates you about them?
It is the practicality. I love vintage clothing because it is practical and it does what it says. And that’s what I’m all about.

Which materials did you choose, and why did you pick them?
The concept of a collection always drives the fabrics. With a naval theme and a winter collection, which revolves around the North Sea and minus 30 degrees, it’s about extreme fabric. Fabric that keeps the water out, keeps the warm in. We used a lot of wool, and we used a lot of heavy denim – 12 to 14 ounce denim.
And what about the colours? Lots of blue?
Yes, lots of indigo and navy. Also plenty of winter white and naval white. We also added some army green for a very military-inspired look. We washed and faded the blues. It is a really tight colour card.
